Leaks & water damage
Water near your electrics: what to do
Keep clear of wet electrical equipment and know what needs checking before power is restored.
Keep away from the affected area
Water around sockets, wiring, light fittings or the consumer unit creates an electric-shock risk. Do not touch wet equipment or enter standing water to reach electrical controls. Keep other people away.
Switch off only if it is safe
Turn off the supply at the main switch only if the consumer unit and your route to it are dry, undamaged and safe. If it is wet, damaged or showing signs of overheating, leave it alone and seek professional help.
Do not remove covers, attempt repairs or turn the supply back on to see whether equipment still works. For immediate danger, get clear and call 999.
Before using the installation again
Water-affected electrical installations and appliances need assessment by an electrician before reuse. Equipment looking dry is not confirmation that it is safe. Contact your landlord, if applicable, and insurer about the damage and repair arrangements.
Information to share
Explain where the water reached, whether the supply is off and which rooms or fittings are affected. Take photographs only from a safe position. Call TMMRAC on 01785 847519 to discuss the electrical work required.
